Applying for the Long Scholarship

Purpose

Established in 2000 to support Pacific’s general education program, the Thomas J. Long Foundation Core Scholarship Program provides an incentive for students to perform well in their general education courses. Scholarships reward students who demonstrate academic excellence in their general education courses and who show leadership potential. Each year, ten $3,000 awards will be granted for the following academic year.

Eligibility and Criteria

The Thomas J. Long Foundation Scholarships are open only to undergraduate students who meet the following criteria: 

1. Completion of a minimum of five general education courses at Pacific, including the Pacific Seminars, that are not in the department of your major. For example, a physics course would count as one of the five courses for a pre-pharmacy or engineering major. Ideal candidates will demonstrate excellence in a broad range of disciplines.
2. A minimum overall 3.5 GPA in general education courses.
3. Demonstration of promise of leadership in academic or extra-curricular activities.

Application Process and Deadline

Students can self-nominate or be nominated by professors or peers. The application must include:

1. A completed application form
2. a description (no more than two pages) of how general education courses have contributed to your intellectual and/or personal development and how they will prepare you for future leadership
3. A transcript of coursework taken at Pacific
4. At least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member who taught one of your general education courses

Applications must be submitted to the General Education Administrative Assistant in WPC 110 by the end of the second week of February.

Review Process

A sub-committee of the university general education committee will evaluate the applications and make the awards by the end of the spring semester.
