Board of Regents approves closure of Food Studies Program

Upon the recommendation of President Eibeck, Provost Pallavicini and a Special Review Committee, the Academic and Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Regents recommended closure of the Master of Arts in Food Studies program to the full Board of Regents at its April meeting. The Board of Regents approved closure of the program.

The Food Studies program, managed by the College of the Pacific on the San Francisco Campus, was one of the new graduate programs funded by the Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) and launched in 2015. One of the goals of SIF-funded programs is to be financially stable (net revenue positive) by the end of their fourth year of operations. As of spring 2017, the Food Studies program was significantly short of its revenue target due to low enrollments, which were not projected to increase. In fall 2017, a special committee of faculty and administrators reviewed the program and recommended its closure. 

With the Regents' approval for closure, the students admitted into the program in fall 2017 will be the final class. Pacific will help these students to successfully finish their program despite its closure. Program Director Polly Adema and the faculty have developed a teach-out plan through spring 2020 to allow currently enrolled full-time students to complete their degrees. Pacific remains committed to the Graduate School, our graduate programs and the success of our graduate students, all of which are strategically important parts of our long-term growth.
