Cathie McClellan appointed Interim Director of General Education

Office of the ProvostJan 19, 2018

Cathie McClellan, Professor in Theater Arts and previously Assistant Director of General Education for Assessment, has been appointed Interim Director of General Education commencing January 2018 through the 2018-19 academic year.

In this role, Cathie will collaborate with the GE Committee to provide leadership on initial implementation of the GE Action Plan following program review, faculty engagement and development, and assessment.  In addition, she will contribute to two Pacific 2020R initiative teams launching this semester on university-wide learning outcomes and the future organization of the GE program.

Cathie has served as a faculty member in Theater Arts for more than fifteen years and as Department Chair from 2009-2012 and 2016-June 2018.  During her tenure at Pacific she has taught PACs 1, 2 and 3 (and Mentor 1 before that), and served as representative of GE on the University Assessment Committee as well as an ex-officio member of the GE Committee from 2016-2017 in her role as Assistant Director for Assessment. She was instrumental in the program review of General Education last year.

Gesine Gerhard, who led the General Education program for over five years in her role as Director of General Education and Associate Dean of the College, has decided to return to her faculty position in the History Department after an already-scheduled faculty development leave during spring 2018. Provost Pallavicini would like to thank Gesine for her passionate commitment to general education and to our students.

During her tenure in this important leadership position, Gesine oversaw a productive program review for one of the largest university-wide programs, introduced student success initiatives including PACs Plus to address the developmental writing needs of our first year students, and launched new GE courses in the natural sciences designed to make science more accessible for non-science majors. We wish Gesine a productive development leave and look forward to her continued leadership as an active member of Pacific's faculty.
