Pacific 2020R implementation update

Jan 18, 2018

Last fall, University of the Pacific began the implementation of Pacific 2020R, its refreshed strategic plan. Pacific 2020R focuses on two themes, Students with Purpose and Agile and Dynamic Growth, that will guide the university's work for the next five years. Our 2017-18 institutional priorities focus on integrating undergraduate student support, integrating graduate student support and becoming a unified university.

This is an update on the progress of the initiative teams, composed of faculty, staff and students, working to integrate undergraduate student support. Future updates will describe the work underway by the other initiative teams to integrate graduate student support and become a unified university.

Four of the initiative teams focused on Integrating Undergraduate Student Support (UGSS) launched their work last fall and are preparing to share their initial recommendations with the campus community this spring.

As shown in the UGSS matrix on the Pacific 2020R SharePoint site (Pacific login required), the work of these teams will continue through this academic year and beyond:

  • The Academic/Career Advising team was charged with developing recommendations for a comprehensive academic/career advising framework and proposing resource requirements and metrics necessary to implement its vision.
  • The Orientation and First Year Experience team was charged with developing recommendations for a state-of-the-art First Year Experience, beginning with orientation and continuing to the start of the second year, incorporating and integrating academics, student support, and co-curricular experiences.
  • The Pre-Matriculation Experience team was charged with developing recommendations for a smooth on-boarding process for new students including all required academic and business processes through the first day of class.
  • The Safety Net team was charged with implementing the second phase of the Early Alert referral system and planning for future expansion of the system. (Read more about this implementation here.)

Over the past several months, they have developed a set of common recommendations to strengthen the way we support our undergraduates. This spring, the teams will be leading discussions about their work and sharing their recommendations with every school and college as well as the Division of Student Life, Athletics, Council of Assistant and Associate Deans, Staff Advisory Council, ASuop and other groups.

In addition, the teams will hold a series of open forums to connect with campus stakeholders unable to contribute during unit and group discussions. Please look for further information in the Academic Division News and Pacific Insider as well as communications directly from your school or unit inviting you to participate in the unit-based discussions. The teams' recommendations will be distributed in advance of these discussions and the forums.

If you have questions, comments or suggestions about the implementation or communication of the Pacific 2020R initiatives and team recommendations, please use the feedback form on the SharePoint site (Pacific login required).
