Alexander John Stalarow began teaching in the Music History department this fall. Originally from Long Island, he began his musical career as a singer and hornist in various performance settings, including, choirs, orchestras, and in pit orchestras for musical theater, a genre he continues to work in. He holds a B.A. in music and English literature from the George Washington University, and a master's degree in musicology from the University of Toulouse, France. At UC Davis, Alexander completed his doctoral dissertation, Listening to a Liberated Paris: Pierre Schaeffer Experiments with Radio, in 2017. His research explores the early career of Pierre Schaeffer as a radiophonic artist in midcentury France and examines the intersecting histories of experimental music and French state radio. His research has been funded by awards including a Chateaubriand Fellowship from the French government, a Bilinski Dissertation Fellowship, and an Alvin H. Johnson AMS 50 Fellowship. At Pacific, Alexander currently teaches Music Appreciation. He also teaches music history courses at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
