SJ Reads trains the trainers
A group of 37 staff members or volunteers from local non-profits, schools, churches and agencies were trained in literacy development techniques during a recent SJ Reads event sponsored by Beyond Our Gates.
Attendees were equipped with techniques and literacy tools to return to their groups and, in turn, help train others in methods to help enhance early literacy. Saroj Ghoting, a children's librarian and early literacy expert from Pennsylvania, led the six-hour session, which included lively interactive examples of ways to connect with young children.
The training session, which was held at the Cesar Chavez Library branch in downtown Stockton, was funded by the James Irvine Foundation, which has supported Beyond Our Gates initiatives the past two years. Those who attended and completed the session were eligible to apply for a $500 stipend so they could hold literacy training with their organizations.
