New Dean of the Graduate School Appointed

Office of the ProvostMay 11, 2017

Provost Maria Pallavicini is pleased to announce that Thomas Naehr has been appointed Dean of the Graduate School. Naehr comes to Pacific from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC), where he has served as the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies since 2013. During his academic career, he has sailed on more than a dozen offshore research expeditions, published extensively in national and international journals and presented to national and international audiences.

Naehr joined TAMU-CC in 2000 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Geology and Environmental Science and Harte Research Associate in 2006. From 2003 to 2009, he served as the Program Coordinator for the Geology Program, where he was instrumental in reshaping the geology undergraduate curriculum. In 2007, Naehr was named Oceanography and Climate Research Fellow by the Hanse Institute for Advanced Study in Delmenhorst, Germany. He has served as TAMU-CC's Coastal and Marine System Sciences Program Coordinator since 2015.

Prior to his tenure at TAMU-CC, Naehr began his academic career as a post-doctoral fellow at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California in 1998. He earned his PhD in Marine Geology in 1996 from the IfM-GEOMAR Research Center for Marine Geoscience, Kiel, Germany, and a Diplom (MS) in Geology and Paleontology from the Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen, Germany in 1993.

Naehr will begin his appointment on July 7, 2017. The Provost would like to thank Dean Nader Nadershahi and members of the search committee for bringing forth a highly qualified pool of candidates.

"I am so proud that the reputation of Pacific's faculty and students and our vision for building and expanding a robust, high quality graduate program portfolio has enabled us to attract such a talented leader as Thomas Naehr," said Provost Pallavicini.

"I am particularly grateful to Jim Uchizono for his two years of tremendous service as the interim Dean of Graduate Studies," Pallavicini said. "He has done a fantastic job as interim dean, while also serving as the Associate Provost for Research. He is a valuable member of the academic leadership team." Uchizono will continue to serve as the Associate Provost for Research.

With Naehr's appointment, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies will return to using its official name, the Graduate School, effective July 1, 2017, to reflect the importance of this university-wide academic unit.
