Research Day 2017 Recap

On Saturday, April 29, Pacific's annual events Research Day and Pacific Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference (PURCC)  combined for the third year in a row to celebrate faculty, staff and student research and scholarship. It was a fabulous opportunity for the University community to see the outstanding work happening on our three campuses. Pacific faculty, staff and students showcased their research via more than 125 poster and oral presentations and hundreds of faculty, staff, students and family members attended the event. The midday program included remarks by Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Maria Pallavicini, and the presentation of faculty and undergraduate awards (see below). Dr. Xiaoling Li presented his nomination  for Dr. Roshanak Rahimian, Professor in the Department of Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy, as the 2016-2017 recipient of the Faculty Research Lecturer Award. Dr. Rahimian is most noted for her research on diabetes and female gender influences. 

Dr. Jeffrey Hole, Associate Professor in the Department of English, is the 2017 recipient of the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award. In his time at Pacific, Dr. Hole has mentored student in a wide-range of topics such as: "Melville, Whaling, and Slavery", "Liberalism and Islam" and "Engineering and Feminist Theory". Several of his students have presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) and at PURCC. In addition, Dr. Hole was the faculty mentor for a 2014 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship project.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) were awarded to the following students. The SURF program supports faculty-mentored undergraduate research during the summer.  

  • Jocelyn Camargo will be working with Dr. Jessica Grady (Psychology) on "The role of inhibitory control on shy toddlers' adjustment"
  • Caterina Grossi will be working with Dr. Corey Stocco (Psychology) on "The efficacy of utilizing behavioral skills training to improve job interview skills among military veterans"
  • Aelish Guinn will be working with Dr. Tara Thiemann (Biological Sciences) on "Molecular epidemiological survey of bacterial pathogens in Dermacentor variabillis in San Joaquin County."
  • Justin He will be working with Dr. Eric Thomas (Biological Sciences) on "Protein analysis of Corydoras duplicareus venom"
  • Timothy Cheng will be working with Dr. Michelle Amaral (Economics) on "Catastrophic health spending:  How health spending affects poverty in underdeveloped countries"
