Physics department receives NSF grant to study lattice gauge theory
Professors Jim Hetrick (Physics and Analytics) and Kieran Holland (Physics) have been awarded a 3-year grant of $210,000 by the National Science Foundation to support their research in lattice gauge theory from 2016 to 2019. This is a continuation of the NSF support they've had since 2007 along with their late colleague Keisuke Jimmy Juge (Physics), specializing in studying particle physics using supercomputers.
Prof Hetrick will be testing models where hidden extra dimensions in space-time could be revealed by collider experiments, as well as maintaining and updating supercomputer resources in the US. Prof Holland will be studying particle physics models with a new force to explain the properties of the Higgs boson particle, and will also be examining the strong dynamics that bind particles like quarks and gluons together to form atomic nuclei.
Part of their research grant allows them to support students who are interested in computational physics and want to do research.
