Wellness news: Diet and exercise tips for children

A balanced diet and regular physical activity are the cornerstones to a healthy lifestyle. It is never too early to begin to teach your child healthy habits. The habits that you teach to your children at a young age will follow them into their adolescent and adult years.

A good place to start is to ask your health care provider for brochures, booklets or other information about healthy eating, physical activity and weight control that are written in children's language.

Diet Tips:

  • Offer your child a wide variety of foods, such as grains, vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy products and lean meat or beans. 
  • Include healthy snacks as a part of your child's day. Snacks like dried fruit, low fat yogurt and air-popped popcorn are healthy and tasty alternatives to sugary snacks.

Exercise Tips:

  • Kids need a total of about 60 minutes of physical activity a day, but this does not have to be all at one time. Short bouts of activity throughout the day are just as good. 
  • If your children are not used to being active, encourage them to start with what they can do and build up to 60 minutes a day.
