Award-winning lineup announced for 2016 Brubeck Festival

Aug 9, 2016

University of the Pacific's Brubeck Institute today announced an award-winning lineup for the 2016 Brubeck Festival that celebrates the life and musical legacy of Pacific alumnus and jazz icon Dave Brubeck.

This year's festival, again presented in partnership with Pacific Homecoming and Parent and Family Weekend celebrations, will be Oct. 14-15 and will feature performances by iconic jazz singer Carmen Bradford, acclaimed saxophonist Everette Harp, the Pacific Jazz Ensemble, and the Dan Brubeck Quartet, led by one of Dave and Iola Brubeck's sons. The Brubeck Institute is also partnering with The Haggin Museum in Stockton to present a three-month exhibit on Dave Brubeck's life called "Dave Brubeck: Jazz Ambassador."

"We're very excited to again present the Brubeck Festival celebrating Dave Brubeck's legacy," said Patrick Langham, head of the Jazz Studies Program in Pacific's Conservatory of Music and the incoming executive director of the Brubeck Institute. "This is a great line-up of performers bringing jazz to the Central Valley. And the exhibit on Dave's life, which I had the chance to visit when it was in New York, is going to be a really informative and interesting opportunity for people here to see at The Haggin."

The performers come from rich musical backgrounds.

Bradford, the daughter of legendary trumpeter and composer Bobby Bradford and renowned vocalist and composer Melba Joyce, was discovered by William "Count" Basie and was the featured vocalist for the Count Basie Orchestra for nine years. Her career includes three Grammy Awards and performances with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Lena Horne and others. She will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Pacific's Faye Spanos Concert Hall, 3601 Pacific Ave. in Stockton, accompanied by the award-winning Pacific Jazz Ensemble.

Harp, a Grammy-nominated performer who started his career in Houston, Texas, will also play during the 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 performance in Faye Spanos Concert Hall. Harp is now based in Los Angeles and has performed with Teena Marie, Anita Baker, Patti LaBelle, Sheena Easton, Kenny Loggins, Al Jarreau and others. Harp is featured on more than 25 gold, platinum and multi-platinum CDs.

The Dan Brubeck Quartet, originally created to perform the music on the CD "Celebrating the Music and Lyrics of Dave & Iola Brubeck," will close the festival with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Faye Spanos Concert Hall. Based in Vancouver, Canada, the group features vocalist Adam Thomas, who also plays bass, saxophonist Steve Kaldestad, and pianist Tony Foster.

The "Dave Brubeck: Jazz Ambassador" exhibit, originally designed for Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, details Dave Brubeck's 70-year career. It will be on display from Oct. 6 to Jan. 8 at The Haggin Museum at 1201 N Pershing Ave. in Stockton.
