Education

Brent is a pop music arranger, producer, songwriter and recording artist that continues to enjoy a long and productive career. He is a Visiting Instructor in Music Management, specializing in songwriting and music production. Growing up in the Sacramento region, he was signed as a co-leader of his own band, Bourgeois Tagg, to Island Records in the 1980s and had a Billboard hit single "I Don't Mind It at All" produced by Todd Rundgren. The band toured the world with Heart, Robert Palmer, Belinda Carlisle and many others. Brent left the group and released two solo albums on Virgin/Charisma and in 1994 decided to move to Nashville where he recorded the LP Come Join the Living World, which featured four #1 singles.

In 1996, best selling contemporary Christian artist Michael W. Smith invited Brent to join him as Music Director and they toured the world while collaborating on more than a dozen songs, including three number #1s, "Live the Life," "Straight to the Heart" and the 1997 Christian Music Song of the Year, "Cry for Love." He went on to produce songs with best selling artists Jars of Clay and Six Pence None the Richer, before accepting the position of Vice President of A&R at Word Records, the largest Christian music label in the US, which he held for five years while still producing chart topping records for artists such as Amy Grant, Point of Grace, Michael McDonald and Rachel Lampa. During his nine years working in Nashville, Brent was nominated for five Dove Awards in the songwriting and producing categories, and had 16 #1 songs that he wrote or co-wrote.

In 2002, he returned to California and has continued to write and produce music, while serving as music director for various congregations. In 2014, he stepped back on the other side of the microphone and released his first solo record in 20 years, titled Don't Look Back, available on Spotify and iTunes. Brent continues to travel to Nashville and collaborate with a range of artists, while maintaining his home base near Sacramento. He recently started composing music for a new Facebook application that will include original music.

Brent has taught at a variety of summer academies including Pacific Music Business Camp, VocalizeU and served as West Coast A&R rep for BE Music & Entertainment.
