Pacific names Sheared dean of Benerd School of Education

Jun 30, 2016

University of the Pacific today announced it has appointed Vanessa Sheared as dean of the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education, following a nationwide search. She assumes the post on July 11.

Sheared joins University of the Pacific from Sacramento State, where she has served as dean of its College of Education for nearly 10 years.

“In addition to her years of leadership at Sacramento State’s College of Education, Dr. Sheared brings with her an extensive background and knowledge of California institutions of higher education and K-12 programs,” Pacific’s Provost Maria Pallavicini said. “I am delighted to welcome her to Pacific.”

Sheared has been an advocate of equity and social justice in education, and is passionate about promoting positive social change in schools and beyond.

“I come to the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education with a great appreciation for the faculty commitment and dedication to preparing Pacific students who will go on to serve as teachers, counselors and administrators in diverse educational and community organizations within our region and beyond,” Sheared said. “We live in a technologically advanced, local and global market economy, which has a significant impact on how we teach and what we learn.  It’s my goal to advance our presence in these arenas and to provide equitable and collaborative learning spaces and opportunities that will enable faculty, staff and students to achieve academic and professional success in their lives and careers.”

Among her accomplishments, Sheared oversaw the implementation at Sacramento State of a doctorate of educational leadership, one of the first seven independent doctorates offered in 2007 and one of 15 currently offered by the California State University system.

Before joining Sacramento State, Sheared worked for 13 years at San Francisco State, serving as associate dean for academic affairs and professor and chair of the Department of Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies (renamed in 2012, Equity, Leadership Studies and Instructional Technologies).

Sheared holds an EdD in Adult and Continuing Education from Northern Illinois University, an MA in Education and Counseling from Louisiana State University, and a BA in sociology from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois.
