Wellness news on men's health from Delta Health Systems and EAP

On June 19, fathers across the nation will be honored and celebrated, but many may not know that the entire month has been dubbed as National Men's Health Month.

While many men work hard all year and strive to provide for their families, they often overlook their personal health. The stereotype of the hard-driving, overworked male has in fact been studied. Research found that a hard-working man is more prone to stress, hostility, and anger. These traits tend to be more prevalent in males than females, which puts men at a higher risk for hypertension, heart attack and stroke. In addition to these risk factors, studies show that men are more likely than women to:

  • Engage in impulsive or risky behavior
  • Consume alcohol and use nicotine and/or drugs
  • Practice poor eating habits 

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading causes of death in American men are heart disease, cancer, unintentional injury, stroke and diabetes. In addition, 32% of men over the age of 20 have high blood pressure and 35% are obese.

Though many physical ailments occur as part of aging, there are several that can be prevented by making health a priority. There are several common health issues that men should be aware of to help with early detection, prevention and effective treatment, including high blood pressure, heart disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), low testosterone (Low-T) and prostate cancer.

While it may be a daily focus to take care of things around the house, many men put off their annual physical and biometric screenings. This month, encourage the men in your life to schedule a check-up if they haven't done so already!
