Polly Adema appointed director of Food Studies Program

Culinary anthropologist Polly Adema has been appointed director of the Master of Arts in Food Studies program at University of the Pacific, San Francisco, the first food studies program of its kind on the West Coast. She assumes her new post on June 16.

Adema joins Pacific from Arts Mid-Hudson, a nonprofit arts organization serving three New York counties, where she directed the highly regarded Folk Arts Program.  She is the author of "Garlic Capital of the World: Gilroy, Garlic, and the Making of a Festive Foodscape," the definitive book-length study of California's Gilroy Garlic Festival.

She received her PhD in American studies from the University of Texas at Austin and her MA from the Folklife Institute at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Adema will be responsible for administering the Food Studies program, including marketing and publicity, student recruitment, networking within the food sector, coordinating activities of students and faculty, and planning community-related events. She will report to the dean of College of the Pacific, the university's liberal arts college.

Pacific's Master of Arts in Food Studies program is designed for working professionals with a career or personal interest in food and the ways that people have grown, prepared and profited from it through history and across cultures. The multidisciplinary program prepares students for success in food-related professions, from food writing to food advocacy, policymaking, marketing and management.
