Curriculum Vitae

Teaching Philosophy

My educational philosophy is built around three elements: knowledge, students and application. First, I believe that certain domains of knowledge are essential for students to succeed in Sport Management. Students have to master the content in the field.

The second cornerstone of my educational philosophy focuses on students. Students come to college with a variety of learning styles as well as a great deal of valuable knowledge. Thus, I view myself as a facilitator in the classroom. It is my duty to try to mesh the information students have accumulated with academic theory. In other words, I add knowledge and then help them reorganize their experiences around those new concepts.

Application is the third element of my educational philosophy. I believe students best understand the significance of knowledge when they are forced to grapple with it in a practical setting. I try to make the classroom a safe place to experiment with the crossroads of knowledge and practice by using case studies, holding debates, taking field trips, requiring volunteer hours, and integrating research in my courses. I also invite guest speakers from college and professional sport organizations who can explain how to apply information in the field.
