ART_Music_Program

Avanced Rehearsal Techniques: The ART of Teaching from the Podium is a new summer course developed by Eric Hammer, Director of Bands at University of the Pacific. The goal is to provide an opportunity for band directors from across the western U.S. to develop all the skills necessary to become truly effective teachers of comprehensive musicianship on the podium. Participants will also enjoy the chance to network with other motivated colleagues, and earn graduate-level professional development units (PDUs) for teachers, which may be used for salary advancement.

The format of the course is unique, intense and powerful. It begins with two days of emphasis on conducting followed by a week of morning sessions devoted to analysis and practice of teaching skills. Afternoons are devoted to practicums on each teaching skill with significant podium time for participants leading a lab band comprised of local high school students. Sessions on score analysis, repertory and time management are also included.

Two levels are offered: 1) Participants who will be fully immersed in all aspects of the ART course and earn 6 PDUs; and Apprentices who will observe and partake of skill development sessions but will have limited podium time in practicums and earn 3 PDUs. Students will be selected after a review of applications that include a videotape of recent rehearsals from their current teaching position and references from two mentors. Only ten will be chosen for the Participant level in order to ensure all get proper time on task during the course. Apprentice numbers will be open-ended.
