Regents approve funding to support student success initiatives

Supporting our students to ensure their success is a strategic priority at Pacific. At the institutional level, student success is essential to fulfilling Pacific's promise of a student-centered education. 

At its January meeting, the Board of Regents approved Strategic Initiative Funding that allows a proposal to improve student success to move forward. Four specific areas were identified for enhancement:

  • Referral and case management processes
  • Advising and degree tracking processes
  • Tutoring services and coordination
  • Support for improving developmental skills (i.e., English language, writing, etc.)  

The proposal gives resources to create new programs and processes to ensure student success by centralizing and coordinating tutoring services; implementing early intervention tools and processes; establishing an intensive English as a second language program (ESL); and implementing more powerful advising and degree audit software.  

The Academic Division and the Division of Student Life will work collaboratively to develop these programs and processes.  

A Student Success Committee (SSC) that has been established will define student success and collect and analyze data; study effective practices and identify gaps; make recommendations for actions and interventions; and raise awareness of student success. This group, consisting of administrators and representatives of the College and schools, will bring expertise in national best practices of student success to inform and guide these efforts. The SSC is chaired by Linda Buckley, associate vice president for planning.  

"These new funding allocations to build on existing student support structures and the establishment of the SSC to create institutional alignment among key support service areas—academic, student life, financial aid, student accounts, registrar, and athletics—will have a significant impact on improving student success and students' educational experience," said Lou Matz, assistant provost for Academic Student Support and Retention. 

The efficacy of new programs and tools implemented will be evaluated using five separate metrics:

  • Improved persistence and graduation rates
  • More efficient and coordinated student referral and case management
  • Improved advising tools and processes for advisors and students
  • Lower fail/drop/withdrawal rates in "gateway" courses
  • Better coordination and assessment of tutoring services campus wide
