The University of the Pacific has been approved by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to accept students in F-1 Student and J-1 Exchange Student status for the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels. Below are some frequently asked questions about the international student program.

What is an F-1 Student?

"A non-immigrant who is pursuing a "full course of study" to achieve a specific educational or professional objective, at an academic institution in the United States." (8 CFR 214.2(f),214.3, and 214.4).

What is a J-1 Exchange Student?

"A foreign national who is (1) studying in the U.S. and pursuing a full course of study leading to or culminating in the award of a U.S. degree, or engaged full-time in a prescribed course of study of up to 24 months (non-degree) duration, (2) Engaged in academic training, or (3) Engaged in English language training." (22 CFR 62.4(a))

What is SEVIS?

SEVIS stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System which is  an online database managed by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) which is a sub-department of DHS. Each student gets a "record" in SEVIS into which IPS inputs the student's personal, academic, financial, and employment information as required by the federal immigration regulations. SEVP also monitors and edits the student's SEVIS record.

Who Monitors F-1 and J-1 students?

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) utilizes SEVIS to monitor the records of all F-1 and J-1 students. However, the university has specified individuals within the International Programs and Services office serve as Designated School Officials (DSO) and Responsible Officers (RO) for F-1 and J-1 students to monitor students "on the ground". The DSOs and ROs manage the students' SEVIS records and update the information to SEVP as needed.

What is an International Student Advisor?

An International Student Advisor is an employee of Pacific in the office of International Programs and Services who assists international students with immigration, cross-cultural, personal, financial and academic concerns. The International Student Advisor also monitors the student's immigration status and updates the SEVIS record as required by the federal immigration regulations and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
