June 2014
President Eibeck charged the Provost and Council of Deans with developing the University of the Pacific's Academic Plan.

August 2014
Council of Deans identified the overarching theme of Crossing Boundaries for Academic Excellence which was inspired by the collaborative momentum that emerged from the Academic Planning and Alignment process. The six areas of focus to explore in the process were: Teaching and Learning, Student Success, Teacher-Scholar, Programs to Meet New Learner Needs, Preparing Students to Address Society's Complex Issues, and Academic Quality.

September 2014: Feedback to Academic Planning Theme Crossing Boundaries for Academic Excellence
The faculty and their Deans discussed what initiatives were already happening that crossed-boundaries and ideas for initiatives that they would like to do. In-unit conversations led by the respective Deans took place through early October. This feedback was analyzed and synthesized. The Deans and the Provost used this material to inform an initial framework for the plan to vet with the university.

October/November 2014: Initial Framework for Academic Plan
Faculty, staff and students across the university engaged in rich discussions about the ways Pacific could cross-boundaries to achieve three big goals proposed for the academic plan. Participants brainstormed potential initiatives to achieve the proposed goals, identified elements they would want to spend time working on, discussed "what's missing" from the proposed framework, and brainstormed ways to find better language to capture our aspirations for Pacific students in the next five years.

All of the ideas voiced during the conversations were transcribed and made available on this Academic Planning Sharepoint site.

December 2014
The ideas gathered from the cross-unit conversations, as well as ideas from conversations in the schools/college, conversations with the Provost Leadership Council (PLC), and online submissions were coded and synthesized to create a draft of key goals and strategies vetted at an Academic Planning Retreat. Retreat participants included the PLC, four faculty representatives (two from Academic Council Executive Board and one each from the San Francisco and Sacramento campuses), two representatives from Student Life, and one representative each from Development and Business & Finance. The graphic represents the emerging framework for the academic plan.

During the retreat, participants discussed impactful initiatives to build Pacific's reputation over the next 3-5 years. The retreat concentrated on initiatives for two of the three key goals proposed: "Quality Academic Programs that Address Societal Needs" and "Graduates Prepared to Lead Successful Lives."

For the third goal of the plan, "Active and Engaged Faculty," the Provost asked the Academic Council to work in concert with faculty in the individual units to recommend impactful initiatives for the faculty to advance Pacific's reputation. This included recommendations for wordsmithing the goal, since the wording did not yet capture accurately the aspiration for the faculty role in advancing Pacific's reputation. All feedback from this session was synthesized into a first draft of the plan.

January/February 2015
The first draft of the plan was disseminated to the university community for input from faculty, staff and students. In-unit and cross-university conversations as well as online opportunities were available for faculty, staff and students to provide feedback to the draft plan. In addition, Academic Council led a faculty effort to revise Goal 3. All comments and responses, available here, were coded and synthesized to create the next iteration of the draft plan. This draft plan was then reviewed at the Council of Deans Retreat in early March to further develop the language for the final draft Academic Plan, and Academic Council Leadership reviewed Goal 3 and wrote the contextual information for that portion.

March 2015
The draft plan was disseminated to the university community to provide feedback in the final round of the planning process. The site is available to view the final feedback.

April 2015
The Academic Council, Council of Deans, and Cabinet approved Crossing Boundaries for Academic Excellence, and it was reviewed by the Board of Regents.
