Pacific mourns the passing of former Regent Charles Bloom

Dec 5, 2014

Charles Bloom '43, a former Pacific Regent and staunch Pacific supporter, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the age of 92.

"The Pacific family is saddened by the loss of a great friend," said President Pamela A. Eibeck. "Charlie loved this University and enriched it through his many contributions as a Regent and through his generous philanthropy. He will be deeply missed."

Born in San Francisco on Jan. 26, 1922, Bloom was raised in Stockton and attended College of the Pacific where he met his late wife Carolyn (Williams) '49. One of their sons and three grandchildren also received their educations at Pacific. Charles served as a Pacific Regent from 1992 to 1999.

The Blooms were generous supporters of Pacific over the years. They were inducted into the Gallery of Benefactors in 2004. Charles was an inaugural member of the 1851 Society, which recognizes the University's most generous donors. The Blooms' contributions included support of the Charles and Carolyn Bloom Student Services Center in the Eberhardt School of Business, the John T. Chambers Technology Center, and the Charles and Carolyn Bloom Endowed Engineering and Business Scholarships.

The Blooms' three sons—Gary '75, a graduate of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Bruce and Ronald—all preceded them in death. The family's Pacific legacy continued with three of the Blooms' grandchildren, Scott Bloom '10 '11, Kristen Bloom '11, '13, and Bruce Bloom '14, also attending Pacific.

Bloom frequently attended University events. He recently had the joy of leading the Half-Century Club processional at the 2013 Commencement ceremonies accompanied by his granddaughter, Kristen, who graduated that year with her Master of Arts in Educational Administration from the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education.

A prominent Stockton businessman, Bloom retired from CHB Investment Company and previously was chairman of Bloom Construction Company.

There will be a Celebration of Life at the Alex and Jeri Vereschagin Alumni House at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
