Jan Good Award

The Jan Good Award is presented to winners of an annually posted essay contest in French or Spanish. An alumna of the the Department of Modern Language and Literature, Jan Good majored in both French and Spanish, and established this competition to recognize outstanding students in these fields. The essay topic differs from year to year, as does the value of the award. More details regarding the 2019 competition will be posted on this page as they become available.

General Rules for the Jan Good Award

  1. The essay submitted must be an original piece of work which has not been submitted for any class assignment.

  2. Format:  1,500-2,000 words, typed, double-spaced, correct spelling including accents written in French or Spanish.

  3. The topic may be treated as fiction or non-fiction.

  4. Deadline:  TBD

  5. The judging of the essays will be done by the faculty of the Department of Modern Language and Literature.

  6. The award will be deposited to the student's account.  The balance will be issued to the student in the form of a check at the time of graduation or after leaving the University.  If any of the recipients receive need based financial aid, all resources must be incorporated into the financial aid package.  Many students have remaining "unmet need" and additional aid will help to reduce the unmet need, other students have loan and /or work study that can be reduced to allow a scholarship to replace the self-help component of their aid and package.  In the case of some students with limited financial need, the Jan Good Award may reduce a scholarship/grant that has already been awarded.

  7. Student must be studying a major or minor in the Modern Language and Literature Department.
