Welcome to the Dean's Office

Greetings Faculty, Students, and Staff!

It is always a bittersweet moment - the beginning of the new academic year. We will miss the long days of summer, the time to go here or there, but then the air begins to cool in the evening, and when we see you, the first year students on campus looking apprehensive but also excited, it feels wonderful to be part of your new beginning.

Dean Fraden at Commencement 2014At the College of the Pacific, time didn't stop during the summer altogether. Many faculty were in their labs; others were teaching students, some here on campus, some via the web, some in Shanghai and Beijing! Staff were processing end of the year budgets and making sure we ended up in a stable financial position, which we did.

Over the summer some decisions were made that will affect many of you as we have approved searches for new faculty in the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Economics, Psychology, and Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences. There will be other proposals for new hires in new subjects this coming year that will also expand our offerings in the liberal arts. Along with new hires, there are groups of faculty planning a new major that will combine theater, film, and "new media" (including radio, TV, and computers); and another group are planning to reimagine our Environmental Studies program.

This coming year every department in the College of the Pacific will be deciding what they will require of a student to award them honors in their chosen major. And I will be asking every department how I can help them make it possible to give every major an experiential opportunity, whether that be working as an intern or on a research project.

So, time doesn't stand still. A new year happens more than once a year, giving all of us another chance to inspire and conspire, to discover and collaborate, to find our way in our Pacific community. I look forward to this next year and wish all of you a productive, creative, happy and healthy time.
