Internships/Research
Many research projects take place beyond the boundaries of the campus. Here, Biology professor Stacy Luthy and a student are using dual-frequency identification sonar, or DIDSON, to identify fish in murky delta waters.
You will hear a lot about "experiential learning" at Pacific. Experiential, or real-life, learning opportunities spark students' imaginations, embolden their thinking and often set them on a path of intellectual inquiry that helps to shape not only their years at the College of the Pacific, but their lives beyond as well.
In all of our departments and programs, the College provides opportunities for students to acquire practical skills and knowledge through a variety of internships, fieldwork and research projects.
Internships have included:
- Working with Disney on a public relations project
- Dealing with policies in Washington D.C.
- Working in the California Governor's office
- Helping to catalogue and preserve historical documents at Stockton's Haggin Museum
Undergraduate Research Support
At Pacific, student researchers gain access to the caliber of faculty scholars normally found only at research universities while retaining the one-on-one attention our small, arts and sciences college is known for.
Faculty in the College of the Pacific are widely involved in mentoring student research, and they help students find avenues for presenting their work. It is common to see undergraduate students working alongside graduate students on research projects.
Fieldwork and research assignments have included:
- Documenting historic buildings in downtown Stockton
- Calculating water chemistry in the Delta
- Studying the inequities of the criminal justice system as applied to local immigrant communities
