New athletics fields taking shape

Jul 28, 2014

New University of the Pacific athletic facilities for field hockey, soccer and tennis are taking shape on the west edge of the campus in Stockton.

Contractors have been working this summer to level the dirt berms that made up Amos Alonzo Stagg Memorial Stadium and prepare the ground for the new field hockey field scheduled to be completed by fall. Concrete was poured last week for curbs, gutters and other infrastructure around the field.

Drainage and other work was also done in preparation for a Edel Grass artificial playing surface. Edel Grass is a synthetic turf system used in landscaping and on a wide range of sports fields. It is accredited by several international sporting federations and is very popular worldwide. Pacific's new field hockey field will have one of the first Edel Grass fields installed in the United States.

Physical Plant modified the stadium removal plan and schedule so that the field would be completed early enough for the team to play some home games on campus for the first time since October 2012. The team had been playing its "home" games in the East Bay Area.

Pacific is also scheduled to host the Nor Pac Championships this year for the first time.

Dirt removal will continue with work on a new soccer field and a tennis center following the completion of the field hockey facility.
