Dean Welch announces retirement

Jun 30, 2014

C. Brigid Welch, dean of University of the Pacific's Library, has announced her retirement as of June 30 after a career in libraries that spanned 40 years.

"Dean Welch has given six years of excellent service to the University community as she positioned the library, its collections and services toward the future," said Pacific Provost Maria Pallavicini. "We are grateful to her for her commitment, dedication and service. I know we all wish Dean Welch the best in her retirement transition."

Lynn Beck, dean of Pacific's Gladys L. Benerd School of Education, will serve as the interim dean of the University Library. She will continue in her role as dean of the School of Education.

"I am grateful to Dean Beck for stepping up to this leadership role, one that she so ably leads for the Benerd School of Education," said Provost Pallavicini.

During her time at Pacific, Welch also was vice chair of the Brubeck Institute Advisory Board. A member of the Board of the Library and Literacy Foundation for San Joaquin County from 2008-11, Welch served as its president 2009-11. She served on the board of directors of the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) 2008-14.

Under Dean Welch's leadership, the University Library increased funding for electronic resources and extended access to databases by Pacific students, faculty and staff at its campuses in Stockton, Sacramento and San Francisco. Other accomplishments include implementation of POUNCE, a web-scale discovery service, allowing users to search both print and digital content in one search as well as implementation of the University Library's Information Competency Plan which succeeded in integrating information literacy into Pacific's undergraduate General Education Program, the Pacific Seminars.

Dean Welch came to University of the Pacific in 2008 from Santa Clara University where she had been the assistant university librarian for public services. Before that she held a variety of library public services and management positions at Menlo College, Stanford University Libraries, George Washington University, UC San Diego, and University of Houston. She holds a bachelor's of arts degree in English literature from Arizona State University and a master's of library science from University of Texas, Austin. In addition, Welch held positions with the American Library Association and the Association of Research Libraries.
