Provost Appoints New Vice Provost for Distributed Learning

Provost Maria Pallavicini has announced the appointment of Vernon Smith as the new Vice Provost for Distributed Learning. Smith, who most recently served as the Chief Academic Officer and Provost of the MyCollege Foundation/Portmont College at Mount St. Mary's College, will join Pacific on June 23.

In his new role, Smith will collaborate with enrollment management, technology and other units to ensure that students, particularly working adults, receive the best experience possible, regardless of program location. Smith will work closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Center for Professional and Continuing Education to support faculty in teaching needs and professional development for instruction, including enhancements in using technology in teaching, Pallavicini said.

"I am very pleased that Vernon Smith will be joining Pacific. Dr. Smith brings a wealth of expertise and experience in offering academic programs at multiple sites to multiple student sectors including undergraduates, graduates and working adults, in using technology to enhance learning and access, and in collaborating closely with academics and administration," she said.

Before Mount St. Mary's College, Smith served as vice president of academic affairs at Rio Salado College, of the Maricopa Community College District, in Tempe, Arizona. He served in a variety of roles during his tenure at that 62,000-student institution and has deep experience in faculty training, support and professional growth.

"I was familiar with University of the Pacific as a top-tier institution before learning about this position, and I was very impressed as I met with and interacted with faculty, staff, and administrative leaders. Everyone I have met has been welcoming and gracious. I got a real sense of the commitment to excellence across the institution as well as solid thinking about future opportunities.
