Pacific's CCI wins $25,000 grand prize in national competition

Competing head-to-head against schools like Johns Hopkins and Marquette, Pacific's Center for Community Involvement emerged victorious in the Students With Drive Competition, gaining much needed resources to expand its community outreach efforts

The Center for Community Involvement facilitates thousands of student volunteer hours each year. The proceeds from the Zipcar competition grand prize will enable CCI to expand its services and provide transportation for students without cars.

CCI volunteer servicePacific's Center for Community Involvement handily squashed all competitors in the recent national Facebook competition "Students With Drive" hosted by Zipcar Inc. and Ford Motor Company. The $25,000 Grand Prize includes $5,000 in Zipcar transportation credits, $10,000 in cash for the organization and $10,000 for Pacific's General Scholarship Fund. This is on top of the $5,000 in transportation credits that the CCI won in previously in the monthly Students With Drive competitions, which also put them in the running for the grand prize.

Zipcar, Ford and the CCI will be hosting an event at 12:30 pm on April 16 in front of the DeRosa University Center to celebrate this achievement.

"We are so thrilled to be the ZipcarU Students with Drive Yearly Grand Prize Winner!" said Shelly Zeiser '14, a music therapy major and member of CCI's executive board who was the organizer of the contest effort. "I personally was so touched to see the way in which so many people came together to support the Center for Community Involvement and see this as continuing the passion we have for bridging the gap between the Pacific and Stockton communities. This was only possible because of the support and votes of Pacific students, staff, faculty and alumni, the family of youth who receive our tutoring services and Stockton community as a whole."

The competition played out dramatically on Facebook last week with friends of CCI—including staff, faculty, students, alumni and their friends and family members, as well as the families of youth who receive tutoring services—voting to support the cause. Pacific ran neck-and-neck against top contenders Johns Hopkins and Marquette Universities, who alternately dashed ahead of Pacific but were ultimately defeated.

The University entered into a Zipcar program several years ago to provide transportation alternatives for students without cars or who choose not to bring cars to campus. With the Zipcar credits and funds from the prize proceeds, CCI will have additional resources to enable them to expand outreach into the community and assist students without transportation to participate in volunteer and tutoring activities off campus. In addition to a number of other outreach programs, the CCI currently provides tutoring at six schools, with 979 youth receiving services. Last year alone, the CCI tracked 12,615 volunteer hours.
