Healthy eating tips and resources for Nutrition Month

During March Nutrition Month, take advanatage of a variety of resources available through Pacific's EAP program and on campus to help employees improve nutrition and overall wellness

March is National Nutrition Month! Consider using the University's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as a resource when it comes to healthy eating and nutrition. 

The Fitness and Nutrition tab of the Wellness section includes articles such as "100-calorie snacks," that provides 10 options that can keep you energized and making the best choices when it comes to snacking.  Some snacks included in the article are a cup of baby carrots with two tablespoons of hummus, celery sticks with two tablespoons of peanut butter, and a cup of low fat or skim chocolate milk.  Find other articles on adding fruit to your diet, or take a Healthy Nutrition Habits Assessment.

Instead of focusing on the latest fad diets, we encourage you to "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right!" This philosophy combines nutrition and taste for meals that you and your family will love while keeping them healthy.

Rather than focusing on what foods you shouldn't eat, add in healthy favorites like vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins. 

Whether shopping at the grocery store, eating at a local restaurant or cooking meals at home, enjoy these easy steps to keep your taste buds excited while making sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs.

When shopping for food, make it a point to try one new fruit, vegetable or whole grain every week.  The next time you and your family head out to eat, choose a restaurant that features ethnic foods from Asia, Europe or Africa. These restaurants often feature menus filled with healthy options that will be new to you. Or head to a restaurant that specializes in using seasonal ingredients. Frequently you will be able to order your favorite dish but with a new and exciting flavor twist.

Lastly, Add variety to your staple dishes by varying the ways you cook them. Grill or broil the chicken you typically bake. Mash the potatoes you typically roast. Steam the vegetables you typically sauté. And get to know your spice cabinet. A pinch of this and a dash of that can add a fresh zest to an old favorite!
