The Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences announced that Margaret E. O'Kane, one of the nation's leading advocates for quality assurance in health care, will be speaker  for the school's 2014 Commencement. She will be giving the keynote address at ceremonies being held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014, in Alex G. Spanos Center.

O'Kane is the founding and current President of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), an independent, nonprofit organization that improves health care quality through measurement, transparency and accountability. During her tenure, NCQA developed, maintained and expanded the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set, the nation's most-widely used quality measurement tool.

She has served as co-chair of the National Priorities Partnership and is a board member of the Foundation for Informed Decision Making and the American Board of Medical Specialties. She was elected a member of the Institute of Medicine in 1999 and received the 2009 Picker Institute Individual Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Patient-Centered Care. She received the Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award from the National Center for Healthcare Leadership in 2012.

Among other awards and recognition, O'Kane has been selected as one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare three times (2005, 2011, 2013) and as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Health Care for 2013 by Modern Healthcare magazine—the industry's leading source of healthcare business and policy news, research and information. She was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award (2012) from Johns Hopkins University, where she earned a master's degree in health administration and planning.
