Verbeek Picks Up Singles Win As Tigers Fall At Stanford

Jan 14, 2014

University of the Pacific men's tennis team opened up the 2013-14 Spring season with a 6-1 loss at No. 41 Stanford on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The Tigers begin the season 0-1, while Stanford is 1-0.

Stanford opened the match with two victories in doubles to take the point, though sophomore Sem Verbeek and freshman Miguel Diaz were leading 5-4 when the point was decided. Verbeek was the lone Tiger to pick up a singles victory at No. 1, as he posted a 2-1 comeback win over John Morrissey at the No. 1 spot. Verbeek dropped the first set 6-4, then rallied to win 6-4 and 6-2 to take the victory.

"Today was very close other than two matches," said Pacific Men's Tennis Head Coach Ryan Redondo. "The match could have gone either way with the multiple sudden death points we lost. Today was a great opportunity for us to start the season going against a tough team and it definitely showed us what we need to do to continue to work towards our potential."

The Tigers are next in action with a home match against UC Davis on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2:00 p.m. on the Hal Nelson Tennis Center.
