Research Opportunities

Exciting opportunities
Undergraduates in the Department of Geological & Environmental Science at the University of the Pacific are strongly encouraged to engaged in a student-centered research project, especially for those intending to go to graduate school. Our faculty have a long and successful history of vigorously supporting eager, self-motivated undergraduates in mentored, self-directed field- and laboratory-based research opportunities.

As early your first year at Pacific, you can join an established research effort or begin developing your own project. Student-faculty research collaborations often begin with a volunteer effort or as part of GEOS 197 (Undergraduate Research). If you are interested in exploring undergraduate research opportunities in Geological & Environmental Science, please contact a faculty mentor directly -- don't be afraid to ask!

Support for student research & travel
Support for student research projects may eventually come from a variety of sources, including the Office of Undergraduate Research Pacific Fund and the Faculty Research Council. You are also encouraged to communicate your research results through presentations at the at the annual Pacific Undergraduate Research & Creativity Conference (PURCC). Student presentations of research results at meetings of professional organizations such as the Geological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union is both expected and supported with funding through the Pacific Fund Undergraduate Conference Travel Grant program.
