PEDD 9154: Student Experience: Online Accessibility & Compliance (2 PDU)

PEDD 9154: Student Experience: Online Accessibility & Compliance Student Experience: Online Accessibility & Compliance provides practical strategies and pedagogical advice on accessibility and compliance for instructors teaching in an online environment. This course will provide an overview of the relevant history and legal framework for the American with Disabilities Act and 508 compliance. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing an accessibility plan, and providing participants with some straightforward strategies, tools, and skills to both assess the accessibility compliance and their own courses, identifying potential problem areas, adapting to unforeseen situations, and some best practices for moving your online course towards compliance.

  Instructor participants will

  • Be able to demonstrate through writing, collaboration, and debate information theory about accessibility and disability issues in online learning.
  • Evaluate and judge a wide range of tools and systems available to support student access and online learning.
  • Demonstrate ability to discuss accessibility and disability issues with colleagues in education.
  • Demonstrate the use of various tools to create alternate course components.
  • Develop and demonstrate the use of an assistive technology in your own course.
  • Access and contribute to online resources and Web 2.0 applications regarding up-to-date accessibility issues and solutions.
  • Reflect orally or in writing about your own accessibility policies and practices in your own class and at your institution.
  • Develop an accessibility policy for your institution or class.
  • Demonstrate an ability to evaluate the necessity and the usefulness of accessibility tools and support systems.
  • Be able to identify and relate key information regarding your institutions accessibility services department.
  • Demonstrate your ability to create its accessible presentations using video, word, PowerPoint, or other tools.
