PEDD 9151: Foundations of Online Course and Curriculum Design (2 PDU)
Foundations of Online Course and Curriculum Design will take a closer look at the relationship between the instructional design of an online course, the choices of technology, the requirements of curriculum, and the needs of assessment. The participants will look at several design models ranging from highly interactive to largely independent. Particular emphasis will be placed on the student experience and the course as a narrative that students can follow. The course will look at establishing Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and using them as a foundation for the backward design model. Also, the course will address various technologies for use in learning environments, virtual environments, synchronous and asynchronous concerns in communication, as well as other elements that impact planning and design such as media, organization, accessibility, and assessment.
Instructor participants will
- Create SLOs specific to their courses that encourage or demonstrate or provide active learning activities in a social environment and demonstrate how SLOs provide the framework for all other elements of the course. Be able to identify and present various was of managing the digital assets of their courses.
- Be able to write, discuss, or present a justification for their course design demonstrating an understanding of how that design will facilitate student learning.
- Develop a plan for assessing students based upon their course SLOs. Discuss methods of employing assessment data into course design.
- Be able to discuss their use of intellectual property in their classes and identify appropriate uses of digital assets under copyright, public domain, and creative commons.
- Write and present a plan that assesses your courses strengths and weakness regarding accessibility goals and guidelines.
