PEDD 9150: Introduction to Online Learning and Pedagogy

In Introduction to Online Learning and Pedagogy, participants will be introduced to a variety of pedagogical concepts and tools that online instructors use in order to establish a firm foundation of learning theory and technical ability.  Online applications will be explored using the open source learning management system (LMS) Sakai, but discussions will be broad enough to apply to other LMSs such as Blackboard, Moodle, Angle, and others. Activities will include hands-on experience with Web 2.0 technologies such as social bookmarking, blogs, twitter, wikis, surveys, Google Docs, and other innovative methods to deliver course content while building and managing student learning communities.  Tools and ideas will be presented in order to build upon or enhance tools and technologies that you may already be using.  Topics covered will also include synchronous vs. asynchronous learning, virtual communities, and best practices for web instruction. Whether thinking about moving your class partly or completely online, or just wanting a better understanding of how online learning can be facilitated, this course will provide an opportunity to learn and explore a variety of tools and ideas that you can discuss and share with others.

Instructor participants will:

  • Experience and analyze various methods students learn and communicate in an online environment.
  • Participate in student communities using online tools.
  • Be able to present information on the way technology both engages and disenfranchises students and demonstrate how that can both positively and negatively affect their class.
  • Be able to discuss accessibility and 508 compliance in an informed manner and identify potential problem areas for online education.
