Diversity Fellows Program

About the Diversity Fellows Program

The Diversity Fellows Program began in 2010. Each year a diversity fellow is selected to promote academic diversity and inclusion at Pacific.  The fellowship is for one academic year and can range between $4,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the initiative. Applications for a fellowship can be submitted in April of each year for the following academic year. Anyone interested in applying for a fellowship need only submit a proposal to the Assistant Provost for Diversity detailing the project or initiative. The request should include the project's intended outcomes and how the project furthers Pacific's commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence. Proposals should not be more than five pages long.

2011-2012 Diversity Fellow, Daniel Santillano

Daniel

About the Diversity Fellow Project: As a Pacific Diversity fellow, Daniel advises undergraduates on how to prepare competitive applications to summer research programs, particularly those in the Science, Technology, and Engineering (STEM) fields. Daniel is also working with underrepresented students encouraging them to consider graduate school in STEM field areas and giving them the tools to be competitive.

About Daniel Santillano: Daniel employs bioinformatics tools to study the ecology of microorganisms which inhabit deep-ocean cold seep ecosystems. After earning his undergraduate degree in Molecular Environmental Biology from UC Berkeley, Daniel was a Fulbright Fellow to Mexico, where he studied the spatial ecology of edible mushrooms in Oaxacan forest landscapes with molecular ecology tools. His doctoral work was conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany. Daniel currently teaches two biology courses at Pacific.
