“Having served on various boards in San Joaquin County for the past 40 years I have certainly attended my share of trainings. This is by far the BEST ever.” -Bobby Wallinger, Library & Literacy Foundation for San Joaquin

Nonprofit Board Training

In the past, boards brought on new members with little experience, little training and assumed they would pick up what they needed to know. Today it is important that organizations are governed by people who understand their role as a board member in leading their organization. People want to be effective board members but don't always have all the knowledge or experience they need.

On Tuesday evenings, April 21 & 28, 2020 (these dates have been postponed due to COVID 19 - new dates to be announced), Peter Johnson, the Director of the Westgate Center for Leadership and Management Development will hold a two-evening training program specifically for nonprofit boards. The purpose of this program is to help develop leaders serving on nonprofit boards. The core topics covered will build a bridge between board members and management and will enable the board and their organization to reach their full potential. A few of the topics discussed include:

  • The Role of the Board
  • Setting the Mission, Vision and Strategic Goals of the Organization (What's our purpose?)
  • Recruitment, Orientation, and Retention of Board Members
  • Financial Understanding for Board Members
  • Surviving in Tough Economic Times
  • Evaluating the Executive Director
  • Creating Successful Annual Board Retreats
  • Fund Development
  • Running Effective Board Meetings
  • Board Self-Assessment

Program Fees: The registration fee is $250. This fee includes all instructional materials.

Classes will be held in the Westgate Center Training Room - Weber Hall Room 112 on the Stockton Campus (building between Burns Tower and Morris Chapel).

It is important for boards to send at least two people from each organization, ideally a board member and the executive director. To ensure that nonprofits have an opportunity to participate in this program, we are providing several matching scholarships to nonprofit boards who pay for at least one board member to attend.
