Workshop: Commercializing Faculty and Staff Research

"Show Me the Money" (aka Financing for Small Businesses) Workshop was presented by the University of the Pacific Economic Development Office, SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and the Northeastern California Small Business Development Center to help regional small businesses (both existing and start-up) identify financing opportunities and consulting and advisory resources for their enterprises.
San Joaquin Partnership Strategic Plan: The Office of Economic Development has been heavily involved with the implementation of the strategic plan for economic development for San Joaquin County as adopted by the San Joaquin Partnership in 2006. Director of Economic Development, Mark Plovnick, has chaired the Entrepreneurship Community Partners Group which has been tasked with the implementation of the Entrepreneurship objectives (see Section Five) of the Strategic Recommendations Report .
San Joaquin Angels: The San Joaquin Angels (SJA) is an angel capital investment group focused on assisting start-up and early stage businesses in the San Joaquin region. SJA is being organized as part of the implementation of the San Joaquin Partnership’s strategic plan for regional economic development. University of the Pacific’s Office of Economic Development has facilitated the creation of SJA, while University students, faculty and staff will work with SJA investors to perform due diligence as well as assisting with the operations of the entrepreneurial businesses funded by SJA. San Joaquin Entrepreneur Challenge: An American Idol style multi-round business plan competition awarding a total of $24,000 in cash and professional services to the two winning entrepreneurs. The Challenge is presented by the San Joaquin Angels investment group, in collaboration with the University of the Pacific, San Joaquin Delta College Small Business Development Center and several regional economic development organizations. Entrepreneur Challenge competitors include individuals with a great idea, or start-up companies, who publicly compete during two nights of competition for selection as the most persuasive business case. Audience and judges select the finalists eligible for the prizes and an opportunity for further discussion with potential investors and advisors.
