Policy on Faculty Tenure

General Policy:
An appointment to a faculty position with tenure is an appointment without limit of time.  Such   appointment continues to the earlier of: date of resignation; date of academic retirement from the University; and/or date of termination of appointment, provided termination occurs pursuant to the written policies of the University set forth in the Faculty Handbook.

Acquisition of Tenured Appointment:
A tenured appointment may be created only by written notice of the President and the Provost of the University. A tenured appointment may not be acquired by any other means, including but not limited to, length of service with the University.

Terms of Appointment with Tenure:
Terms and conditions of an appointment to a faculty position are stated in the written policies of the University set forth in the Faculty Handbook, together with any notices in writing from the University  to the faculty member, stating terms thereof.

Termination of Faculty Tenure Appointment:
 A tenured appointment may be terminated only by written notice thereof to the faculty member, executed and dated by the President and the Provost of the University, and it shall be effective upon  report to the Board of Regents.

Reserved Authority of the Board of Regents, President and Provost:
This Policy describes  the general terms and conditions of faculty tenured appointments. It does not, nor shall it be interpreted to, limit the authority of the President, Provost and Board of Regents, after consultation with the appropriate faculty committees or panels as provided in the  policies set forth in the Faculty Handbook, to reach final decisions concerning what academic activities may from time to time be initiated, modified, or discontinued.
