Service
8. The Task Force recommends that the Academic Council develop specific ways to address faculty concerns regarding service.Faculty comments indicate that there are too many committees, that service is underrated and does not have a positive impact on P&T decisions, and that many service activities are meaningless, inefficient, and have no apparent impact on university policy or practice. In addition, service activities are not distributed evenly among faculty, and for some faculty the time actually spent on service is greater than the 10 percent weight applied by most units.
Faculty comments also indicate the belief that everyone should participate in some minimum level of service. However, all units already require a minimum level of service for P&T. The problem is that the requirements don't have the desired effect of distributing the burden evenly, and don’t address the problems of inefficiency and meaningfulness. If shared governance is to continue, these issues must be addressed.
