Dr. Dave Keefe Has Retired After Three Decades at Pacific
Dr. Keefe began teaching at Pacific in 1978 in the Economics Department, and served as chair from 1983-86. He has held a joint appointment in The College and the School of International Studies since 1987, and has served as Assistant Dean and faculty chair in SIS. He also spent a year as a visiting lecturer at Kobe Gakuin University in Japan.
Keefe will be remembered by his colleagues for being "obsessively devoted to students and doing what's right for them." He has been instrumental in the development and delivery of team-taught interdisciplinary courses in SIS; and has had the privilege of teaching thousands of students in economics, international studies, geography, and demography.
He earned his BS from Cornell in Labor Relations and his PhD from Berkeley in economics. His research interests have included explaining voter preferences in Presidential elections through models that incorporate macroeconomic performance, income redistribution attitudes, resource allocation policies, and voters' uncertainties and fears. Dave is also the author of the text "Global Economic Issues: Things an Educated Person Should Understand in the 21st Century." His research has taken him to Paris, South Africa, Uganda, northern and eastern Italy, and Marseille.
The next phase of Professor Keefe's academic life will be doing research in demography at UC Berkeley.
