Message from the President
To the University Community:I am writing to tell you about some important changes I am making in the Office of the President.
Dr. Jean Purnell has accepted the position of Associate Vice President for Development, effective December 1. Jean will bring her extensive experience as a faculty member, department chair, Dean of the Library, Associate Provost, and Executive Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Board of Regents to this important leadership role. As AVP for Development, Jean will lead the fundraising effort for the Brubeck Institute, which is of strategic importance to me, while also supervising Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Pacific Fund, and the External Relations Directors (school and college development officers). She will also direct the assessment of our advancement services database, and the implementation of solutions that assure readiness for Pacific's next major fundraising campaign.
I am grateful for Jean's wise counsel and tireless efforts to make my transition a success. I am also grateful to her now for playing a similar role in the Division of Development as we search for a Vice President. I know that you will join me in thanking her for the exceptional contributions she has made in support of the Board of Regents, and to the President's Office for both me and for my predecessor, Dr. Don DeRosa.
Mary Lou Lackey will become Vice President and Secretary to the Board of Regents effective January 5. Mary Lou is currently Executive Assistant Dean at the Pacific McGeorge School of Law where she manages finance, Information Technology, Human Resources, Buildings and Grounds, Public Safety, Food Services and auxiliary enterprises. She has helped the Dean shape strategy and represent the law school in the community. Prior to joining University of the Pacific, Mary Lou was a Corporate Vice President with Motorola, where she led a global account team, led the global trade policy program, and created and managed a national state government relations program. In addition to supporting the Board of Regents, Mary Lou's new responsibilities will include supervising information technology, institutional planning, legal counsel, and the President's Office.
The Office of Marketing and University Communications will continue to be part of the President's Office. Richard Rojo will become Associate Vice President for Marketing and University Communications and report directly to me, so that we can work closely to strengthen the University's profile in the region and across the nation.
Finally, the Office of International Programs and Services, formerly part of the Office of the President, will join the Office of the Provost. This change will foster greater integration of David Schmidt's excellent program with the enrollment office and deans.
During the next two months, Jean Purnell and Mary Lou Lackey will work together to ensure a smooth transition. I want to thank both of these talented people for their past, and future, important contributions to the University.
I am confident these changes will help us work more effectively to support our academic mission. Thank you for all you do to make Pacific a great university.
Pamela A. Eibeck, PhD, PE
