Using the John Muir collections
The John Muir Papers is a collection of the writings, correspondence, journals, drawings and other documents produced by John Muir. The John Muir Center is committed to promoting the use of John Muir collections curated by the University of the Pacific Library's Holt-Atherton Special Collections. We encourage faculty and students at Pacific, as well as researchers from around the world, to use and interpret Muir's works for themselves.
We work with the staff of the library's Holt-Atherton Special Collections on projects that promote wider dissemination of Muir's manuscripts and publications.
The John Muir Papers website includes detailed inventories of the collection's contents, links to Muir-related collections at Pacific, and digitized images of Muir, his drawings, journals and correspondence. The Muir collections consist of:
- Nearly 7,000 Muir correspondence
- Over 100 of Muir's personal journals and notebooks
- Over 300 drawings
- Over 2,000 photographs
- Hundreds of manuscripts of his writing
- Muir's personal library of over 1,000 volumes
Researchers can use the richest materials made available online at the Holt-Atherton Special Collections or by visiting the Special Collections in the University of the Pacific Library on the Stockton campus.
