George J. Mitchell Scholarship

What is it?

The Mitchell Scholars Program is a national competitive fellowship sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former U.S. Senator George Mitchell’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be a United States citizen between the ages of 18 and 30 on October 1 of the year he/she is applying and must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university before beginning study under the Mitchell Scholarship.

What are my chances?

Out or 20 selected national finalists, 12 scholarships are awarded annually to applicants for one year of postgraduate study on the island of Ireland based on academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community.

How do I apply?

All candidates must receive nomination from his/her university or college and then fill out an online application from the program's website (link located at the top of this page).  The online application consists of five sections: Personal Information; Education and Employment; Registration of Recommenders/Institutional Endorser; Awards and Activities; and Personal Statement.
