November Career Month Activities

In May, 2008 the Staff Advisory Council (SAC) surveyed staff to determine what events would be most useful to them during National Career Development Month in November. The results indicated that staff wanted development opportunities that would help them evaluate current skill sets through self-assessment. They also want help to prepare for interviews for internal positions and more information about the myriad of opportunities at the university. SAC in collaboration with Human Resources and the Career Resource Center has developed a month-long series of events to take place during November 2008 to address these interests.

The event dates and times for National Career Month are listed below. Please note that during this first year, all events will be held on the Stockton campus. Video or audio conferences for the San Francisco and Sacramento campuses will be available where noted below. RSVPs will be required for some events, but suggested for all,  due to limited seating or catering. Exploring Job Opportunities at Pacific: Monday, November 10th, 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Library Community Room, coordinated by Kathleen Quinn, Staff Training & Development Manager.
A brown-bag lunch panel discussion on job opportunities at Pacific will kick off National Career Development Month. Staff members from five divisions as well as the Sacramento and San Francisco campuses will be available to answer your questions regarding opportunities, qualifications, and the process for obtaining positions and training in the departments within their divisions. A person attending this event will leave with a basic understanding of the primary mission of the five divisions, opportunities within, and how best to seek these opportunities. Video conferencing will be available. Although a RSVP is not required for this event, seating will be on a first come/first serve basis. Self-Assessment Workshop: Wednesday, November 12th, 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the President's Room, led by John P. Carvana, Assistant Vice President, Diversity & Community Engagement and Diane Farrell, Associate Director Career Resource Center.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of their personality preferences which will be measured through taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Preferences will be revealed in the areas of decision making, orientation to the external world, direction of energy and gathering information. This information is helpful in terms of gaining a broader awareness of one's style or temperament and can be useful in determining career preferences. Interested participants will be asked to early identify in order to complete the MBTI in advance of this session.  An RSVP is required for this event. The deadline to signup is November 3rd. Grip & Grin Networking Workshop:  Tuesday, November 18th 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Regent's Dining Room, led by John P. Carvana, Assistant Vice President, Diversity & Community Engagement.
Some people are very skillful at "working the room" and others tend to be a bit apprehensive about the do's and don'ts of effective mingling. Like it or not, networking is a powerful skill that anyone can develop and one that can make a big difference in career advancement. Remember: "It's not what you know OR who you know. It's who knows YOU!" This session will provide even the strongest introverts with the tools and information needed to improve their impact at social / business gatherings. Packaging Yourself, Interview & Resume Skills:Wednesday, November 19th, 11:30 to 1 in the University Center, Room 211A led by Linda Evans, Enterprise Applications Project Manager and Sally Berry, Human Resources Representative.
How you present yourself is key to getting that interview and the opportunity to sell your skills and ability. Learn resume writing skills and interviewing tips. Get insights into the truth about the size of your resume, the importance of a cover letter, and what not to assume when interviewing internally for a new position. Pulling it All Together - Speaker Event:Thursday, November 20th, Noon in the Pacific Theatre coordinated by Faye Snowden, Manager, Telecommunications
This culminating event will feature long-time Stockton resident and award-winning speaker Victor Delgado of Dale Carnegie. He will reveal ways to position yourself for growth while thriving in your current position. His primary focus will be on collaboration and communication. Victor Delgado is the owner and instructor for V M Delgado & Associates, Inc., which presents Dale Carnegie Training in the San Joaquin Valley. His organization won The Dale Carnegie Chairman's Club Award in 2005 and the Global Trainer's Award in 2006. Vic is rated 4th of 3,400 plus instructors throughout the world.
