Dear Stockton Community,
This spring 2019 will be the last semester of the Individual Tutoring program. We will not be continuing the Individual Tutoring Program for the 2019-2020 school year.
In 2016, the State of California passed legislation to increase the minimum wage annually until reaching $15/hour in 2022. The Volunteer Center has historically attracted and retained strong tutors through ongoing training and competitive wages above the minimum. As a result, the overall costs to maintain this program are no longer sustainable.
We recognize the deep impact that this decision has on our community. For the Pacific community, the Volunteer Center has historically been one of the largest employers for students. In our greater Stockton community, Volunteer Center students have spent the last three decades working as tutors and mentors. We are committed to helping our Individual Tutoring families find alternative educational enrichment programs in Stockton and San Joaquin County. The Volunteer Center will maintain our partnership with Stockton Unified School District and continue supporting these existing programs with Pacific student tutors.
The Volunteer Center was founded as the Anderson Y in 1879 and has evolved over time, providing various programs and services to our Pacific and Stockton communities. We look forward to the continued evolution of this legacy.
Thank you for your contributions to the Individual Tutoring program and if you have any questions, please reach out to me directly at the contact information below.
Sincerely,
Marylou Bagus-Hansen, Assistant Director
