Advisory Board

The Brubeck Institute Advisory Board is entrusted with the responsibility of advising and guiding Institute leadership and staff with the development of the Brubeck Institute's mission statement, purpose, goals, policies, programs, and activities.  Its role is critical to the success of every phase of the Institute's operations.

Board Members:

Darius Brubeck
Darius Brubeck is a pianist, composer, educator, bandleader, and historian currently living in London, England. He is the eldest son of Dave and Iola Brubeck. He taught at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa and is now a senior research associate of the School of Music there, and leads the London-based Darius Brubeck Quartet.

Donald V. DeRosa
Don DeRosa is President Emeritus of University of the Pacific. During his tenure at Pacific, he led the creation of distinctive programs, elevated the University's national visibility, expanded student leadership development programs, expanded partnerships with the local and other communities, and established a rigorous commitment to quality, innovation, and collaboration. Dr. DeRosa's vision and leadership led to the creation of the Brubeck Institute.

Russell S. Gloyd
Russell Gloyd is Dave Brubeck's producer, conductor, and arranger. During his distinguished career with Brubeck that began in 1976, he has conducted scores of concerts with major orchestras, choral ensembles, and jazz organizations throughout the world. He has recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and has produced numerous records for Dave Brubeck and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Richard S. Jeweler
Richard S. Jeweler is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford Law School. He has practiced law in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years. Throughout that time he has represented Dave and Iola Brubeck in legal and business matters, including in the music and recording industries.

Giulio Ongaro
Giulio Ongaro is the Dean of the Conservatory of Music at Pacific. He has held academic and administrative positions at several institutions, most recently at the Flora L. Thornton School at the University of Southern California, where he served as Professor of Musicology and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. As a musicologist, he has published extensively in leading academic journals on music in Renaissance and early Baroque society, as well as in collections of essays on the subject. He holds a B.M. in flute performance from the University of Iowa and an M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Brigid Welch
Brigid Welch is the Dean of the University Library at Pacific. She has held a variety of public services and management positions at academic and research libraries in the U.S., and has worked as an association executive for the American Library Association and the Association of Research Libraries. Her professional experience and interests include research services and collections, information competency instruction, the Information Commons and public policy, digital preservation, and the history of books and printing. She holds degrees in English literature from Arizona State University, and in library science from The University of Texas at Austin.
