Reports and Current Agenda Items:
CDMA Innovation Initiatives
Doherty presented an updated report from April '07 on CDMA. There is the concern that we could fall behind compared to other institutions due to the lack of current technology in our Computer Science programs. The curriculum is still in draft form and changes within this curriculum may occur. There are concerns about the classroom space and expenses for refreshing the programs. Leland has a positive outlook with regards to alumni who are very enthusiastic to help fund the start up expenses for this type of program. Gilbertson appreciated all of the work and enthusiasm that Doherty and Phillips have invested, yet he is concerned about the enthusiasm from the faculty to move forward. Doherty assured that there is sincere interest from the faculty and it all depends on funding at this point. Gilbertson feels that there needs to be a Dean to help support this program. Gilbertson will continue discussions with the Dean and others in order to make it a more robust program. Leland has offered to assist with the facility aspect to build a lab where we have existing space and the costs that are involved.
Academic Budget Presentation
Gilbertson has modified the budget and it is merely a plan responding to the tight budget that is forthcoming. IPC was reminded that it is not our responsibility to release funds or allocate dollars, but to assure that institutional priorities are address. It is our attempt to address nearly all of the items on page 2 of the report. Gilbertson provided an overview and explained the list of priorities with justification.
ISPC Memo on Information Strategy
The main three priorities regarding central computing were: 1. Commitments, 2. Administrative Reporting Initiative and 3. Academic Support Initiative. Overall, there is the concern that we are not able to sustain the technology within the classrooms which is not acceptable. We can not continually have the lack of technology in order to recruit the students that we would like to enroll in comparing Pacific with other universities that have two or three times as much technology. IPC is being asked to review the ISPC memo and provide their thoughts. Funds may need to be reallocated from other budgets in order to support the technology needs for the student learning environment.
