Discussion:
Sun Rays
Frederick reported that ITPC supports the plan to continue the Sun Ray project. Sun Rays were reviewed by ITPC as part of the FY03 budget recommendations. ITPC feels the University needs to fulfill is obligations to Sun and produce a report at the end of the fiscal year. Frederick sighted some that some issues, mainly high maintenance costs, with the Sun Ray project diverted resources from within OISR. He felt that a requirement for continuing the project was that is stayed within its budget, including back end support.
Gilbertson thanked Stark and Hetrick for their leadership and hard work on the Sun Ray project. It was pointed out that the Sun Rays benefit mainly COP and Engineering, and that the continued support of the project is, in effect, a subsidy for those units. Stark reported that the University has a potential to use 500 Sun Rays, with additional space for growth in the administrative areas. Furthermore, the project was sized for a large number of normal, unspecialized, users which did not end up using the system. Also, it was mentioned that the Sun Rays now have the capability to connect to Windows NT servers and can use USB, parallel and serial devices. Gilbertson said that the Sun Ray report will be available on the IPC website.
Senior Survey
Brodnick gave a brief overview of the Institutional Research Office and the strategic planning process. He then reviewed a summary of the Senior Survey. Questions centered on if the indicators in the report coincided with where the University was making investments. Oppenheimer suggested that some support for professional and graduate programs for surveys be provided. Brodnick said that he would be happy to provide guidance to units, and that the University was initiating a graduate survey, but because of the breadth of the University, IRO cannot support individual departments.
Facilities
Cavanaugh reviewed the plans for the proposed Biology Building, OISR-Human Resources renovation and the Baun Fitness Center addition.
