Honoring Our Service Members

November 11, 2019

Dear Pacific students, faculty and staff,

As our country observes Veterans Day today, I want to recognize and thank our staff, faculty and students who are veterans, active-duty service members, guardsmen and reservists. Your service and sacrifice—and that of your families—keep our country safe.

Veterans have a strong legacy at Pacific. During World War II, the university offered academic courses and housing tailored to veterans and other students with military connections. Once the war ended, Pacific enrolled 450 veteran students.

That legacy continues today through Pacific’s veteran student services, Veterans Center and community events. Last Friday, the Student Veteran Organization (SVO) hosted an open house featuring music alumnus Rick Caccam ’74 performing Taps. In addition, the SVO and Department of English sponsored a talk by Iwo Jima veteran Frank Wright. Wright, who celebrated his 94th birthday this year, shared his inspiring story of challenge and triumph.

Pacific’s appreciation for veterans continues year-round. No matter which branch you served in or how many years you served, raising your hand and committing yourself to service is a brave and selfless act. The Pacific community is grateful for your devotion to our country and our university.
